Alocasia Dragon Scale, also known as Alocasia baginda 'Dragon Scale', features large, heart-shaped leaves that are deeply veined and have a textured, almost reptilian appearance. The leaves are a glossy, dark green colour with prominent silvery-green veins, giving them an exotic and dramatic look. This plant's leaves can grow quite large, making it an impressive statement piece in any indoor jungle.

Light

Alocasia Dragon Scale thrives in bright, indirect light. Avoid direct sunlight, as it can scorch the leaves. However, it can tolerate lower light conditions, although growth may slow down.

Watering

Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Water when the top inch of soil feels dry, and ensure that excess water can drain freely from the pot. Allow the soil to slightly dry out between waterings to prevent root rot.

Humidity

Alocasia Dragon Scale prefers high humidity levels. Increase humidity by misting the leaves regularly, placing a humidity tray nearby, or using a humidifier. Avoid placing the plant near drafts or heaters, which can dry out the air.

Temperature

Maintain a warm environment with temperatures between 18°C to 27°C. Avoid sudden temperature fluctuations and cold drafts, as they can stress the plant.

Soil

Use a well-draining, aerated potting mix rich in organic matter. A mix of peat moss, perlite, and compost works well. Repot the plant every 1-2 years as needed.

Fertilisation

Feed the plant with a balanced liquid fertiliser diluted to half-strength every 2-4 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer). Reduce fertilisation frequency during the dormant winter months.

Pruning

Remove any yellowing or damaged leaves to maintain the plant's health and appearance. Trim leggy stems to encourage bushier growth.

Pests and Diseases

Keep an eye out for pests like spider mites and aphids, which can occasionally bother Alocasia plants. Treat any infestations promptly with insecticidal soap or neem oil.
