Begonia Maculata, commonly known as Polka Dot Begonia, is a striking houseplant famous for its unique foliage. The leaves are olive green with prominent silver polka dots on the upper side and a deep maroon colour on the underside. Its angel wing-shaped leaves and eye-catching patterns make it a favourite among indoor plant enthusiasts.

Light

Prefers bright, indirect light. Can tolerate some direct morning sun but avoid harsh afternoon sunlight. Insufficient light can cause leggy growth and reduce the intensity of the leaf spots.

Water

Water when the top inch of soil feels dry. Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Avoid letting the plant sit in standing water, which can lead to root rot.

Humidity

Thrives in high humidity levels (50-70%). Can adapt to average indoor humidity but prefers higher humidity. Use a humidifier, pebble tray, or mist the plant regularly.

Temperature:

Ideal temperature range: 18-24°C. Protect from cold drafts and temperatures below 15°C.

Fertilisation

Feed with a balanced, water-soluble fertiliser every 2-4 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer). Reduce feeding in fall and winter.

Repotting

Repot every 1-2 years or when the plant becomes root-bound. Choose a pot that is one size larger and has drainage holes.

Pruning

Prune to maintain the desired shape and to remove any leggy or damaged growth. Pinch back the stems to encourage bushier growth.

Pests

Watch for common pests like spider mites, aphids, and mealybugs. Treat with insecticidal soap or neem oil if needed.

Propagation

Easily propagated through stem cuttings. Take a cutting with a few leaves and nodes, then root it in water or moist soil. Ensure good humidity and light conditions for successful propagation.
