The Cretan Brake Fern, scientifically known as Pteris cretica, is an attractive fern species prized for its delicate, lacy fronds and ease of care. Native to regions such as the Mediterranean, including Crete, hence its name, this fern is popular in gardens and indoor spaces for its ornamental value. It typically grows in clumps and adds a touch of lush greenery to any environment.

Light

Prefers bright, indirect light.

Can tolerate some morning sun or filtered sunlight.

Avoid direct sunlight, which can scorch the fronds.

Watering

Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged.

Water thoroughly when the top inch of soil feels dry.

Ensure adequate drainage to prevent waterlogging, as ferns are susceptible to root rot.

Soil

Use a well-draining, peat-based potting mix.

A mix formulated for ferns or general-purpose potting soil mixed with perlite or sand works well.

Temperature

Thrives in temperatures between 15-24°C.

Protect from cold drafts and sudden temperature fluctuations.

Humidity

Requires high humidity levels.

Mist the fronds regularly or place the plant on a humidity tray.

Grouping plants together can also help increase humidity levels.

Fertilising

Feed with a balanced, water-soluble fertiliser diluted to half strength every 4-6 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer).

Avoid fertilising in winter when growth slows.

Repotting

Repot every 1-2 years in spring to refresh the soil and provide room for growth.

Choose a pot with drainage holes and use fresh potting mix.

Pests

Watch out for common pests such as aphids, mealybugs, and scale insects.

Regularly inspect the plant and treat any infestations promptly with insecticidal soap or neem oil.

Pruning

Trim away any yellowing or damaged fronds to maintain the plant's appearance.

Prune back overgrown fronds to encourage new growth and maintain a tidy shape.
