Calathea makoyana, also known as the Peacock Plant or Cathedral Windows, is a stunning tropical plant admired for its striking foliage. Its large, oval-shaped leaves feature intricate patterns of dark green, feather-like markings with pinkish undersides, reminiscent of a peacock's tail feathers. This plant adds a touch of exotic elegance to indoor spaces and is prized for its vibrant colours and unique leaf pattern.

Light

Prefers bright, indirect light.

Avoid direct sunlight, which can cause the leaves to fade or scorch.

Can tolerate lower light conditions, but the colours may not be as vibrant.

Watering

Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged.

Water when the top inch of soil feels dry.

Use room-temperature water to avoid shocking the plant.

Soil

Use a well-draining, peat-based potting mix.

A mix formulated for African violets or orchids can work well.

Temperature

Thrives in temperatures between 18-24°C.

Avoid exposure to cold drafts or sudden temperature fluctuations.

Humidity

Prefers high humidity levels.

Mist the leaves regularly or use a room humidifier.

Placing the pot on a tray filled with pebbles and water can also increase humidity.

Fertilising

Feed with a balanced, water-soluble fertiliser every 4-6 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer).

Reduce fertilising in fall and winter when growth slows down.

Repotting

Repot every 1-2 years in spring to refresh the soil and provide room for growth.

Choose a pot with drainage holes to prevent waterlogging.

Pests

Watch out for common pests such as spider mites, aphids, and mealybugs.

Regularly inspect the plant and treat any infestations promptly with insecticidal soap or neem oil.

Pruning

Trim away any yellow or damaged leaves to maintain the plant's appearance.

Regularly clean the leaves with a damp cloth to remove dust and keep them glossy.
