Calathea rufibarba, also known as the Furry Feather Calathea or Velvet Calathea, is a popular houseplant known for its elongated, wavy leaves with a velvety texture on the underside. The plant gets its name "rufibarba," which means "red beard," from the fine, soft hairs found on the underside of its leaves and stems. The leaves are typically dark green on top with deep purple or burgundy tones underneath, adding a striking contrast. Like other Calatheas, its leaves exhibit nyctinasty, meaning they close at night and open in the morning, making it a dynamic and attractive plant for indoor spaces.

Calathea rufibarba’s unique velvety leaves and movement make it an eye-catching addition to any indoor plant collection. With proper care and attention to its moisture and humidity needs, it can thrive and bring a touch of tropical elegance to your home.

Light

Prefers bright, indirect light.

Can tolerate lower light conditions, but too much direct sunlight can cause leaf scorch or fading.

Avoid placing in direct sunlight, which can damage the delicate leaves.

Water

Keep the soil consistently moist but not soggy.

Water when the top inch of soil feels dry.

Use filtered or distilled water if possible, as Calatheas are sensitive to chemicals and minerals in tap water.

Humidity

Thrives in high humidity (ideally above 60%).

Regular misting, a humidity tray, or a humidifier will help maintain adequate moisture levels.

Low humidity can cause the leaf edges to brown or curl.

Temperature

Ideal temperature range: 18-27°C.

Avoid temperatures below 16°C and keep away from cold drafts or sudden temperature changes.

Calatheas prefer a stable, warm environment for optimal growth.

Soil

Use a well-draining, rich potting mix, such as a blend of peat moss, perlite, and a bit of compost.

The soil should retain moisture without becoming waterlogged.

Ensure the pot has drainage holes to prevent root rot.

Fertilisation

Feed with a balanced, water-soluble fertiliser diluted to half strength.

Fertilise once a month during the growing season (spring and summer).

Reduce or stop fertilising in fall and winter when growth slows.

Repotting

Repot every 1-2 years or when the plant becomes root-bound.

Use a slightly larger pot and refresh the soil with a well-draining mix.

Repotting in the spring is ideal when the plant is actively growing.

Pruning

Prune off any yellow or damaged leaves to maintain the plant’s appearance.

Trimming back leggy stems can help promote bushier growth.

Regularly clean the leaves with a damp cloth to remove dust and enhance the plant’s ability to photosynthesize.

Pests

Watch for common pests such as spider mites, aphids, and mealybugs.

Treat infestations with insecticidal soap or neem oil if necessary.

Keep the environment humid and clean to reduce the chance of pests.

Propagation

Calathea rufibarba can be propagated by division.

During repotting, gently separate the plant into smaller sections, ensuring each division has roots and leaves.

Plant each section in fresh soil and keep in a warm, humid location until established.
