Opuntia microdasys, commonly known as the Bunny Ear Cactus or Polka Dot Cactus, is a charming and compact cactus native to Mexico. Its flattened, oval-shaped pads resemble rabbit ears and are covered with small clusters of glochids (tiny, barbed spines) that form a polka-dot pattern. These glochids can be yellow, white, or reddish in colour, depending on the variety. While it rarely blooms indoors, mature plants may produce small yellow flowers followed by edible red fruits. Its cute appearance and easy care make it a popular choice for both beginners and experienced plant enthusiasts.

Opuntia microdasys is a low-maintenance and visually appealing cactus that adds charm to any indoor or outdoor succulent garden. Its "bunny ear" shape and polka-dot glochids make it a unique and delightful addition to your plant collection.

Light

Requires bright, direct sunlight for at least 6 hours a day.

Indoors, place near a sunny south- or west-facing window.

Gradually acclimate to full sun if moving outdoors to prevent sunburn.

Water

Water sparingly, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings.

During the growing season (spring and summer), water every 2-3 weeks.

In fall and winter, reduce watering to once a month or less to prevent root rot.

Humidity

Thrives in dry, arid conditions with low humidity.

Avoid misting or exposing to excessive moisture.

Temperature

Prefers warm temperatures between 21-38°C.

Can tolerate brief drops to 10°C but should be protected from frost.

Soil

Use well-draining cactus or succulent soil.

Add sand, pumice, or perlite to improve drainage.

Fertilisation

Feed with a diluted cactus fertiliser every 4-6 weeks during the growing season.

Do not fertilise during dormancy in fall and winter.

Repotting

Repot every 2-3 years or when the plant outgrows its container.

Use gloves or tongs to handle the cactus to avoid the irritating glochids.

Pruning

Prune sparingly to control size or remove damaged pads.

Allow cut areas to callus over before watering to prevent infection.

Propagation

Propagate via pad cuttings.

Gently twist or cut off a pad, allow it to callus for a few days, and plant it in dry, well-draining soil.

Water lightly after a week to encourage root development.
