Ferocactus stainesii, commonly known as the Mexican Fire Barrel Cactus or Staines’ Barrel Cactus, is a striking species of barrel cactus native to Mexico. It features a rounded or cylindrical shape that becomes elongated with age and is covered with prominent, rigid ribs lined with fierce, reddish spines. This slow-growing cactus can reach up to 5 feet (1.5 meters) tall over time. During the summer, it produces bright yellow to red flowers at the crown, followed by small, ornamental fruits.
Ferocactus stainesii is a robust and dramatic cactus that makes a bold statement in desert gardens or as a potted specimen. Its spiny texture and vibrant flowers add unique character to any collection, while its low-maintenance care requirements make it a favourite among cactus enthusiasts.
Light
Thrives in full sun and needs plenty of bright, direct light to grow well.
Indoors, place near a south-facing window or use supplemental grow lights.
Gradually acclimate to full sun if moving outdoors to prevent sunburn.
Water
Water deeply but infrequently; allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings.
During the growing season (spring and summer), water every 2-4 weeks.
Reduce watering in fall and winter, as the cactus enters dormancy.
Humidity
Prefers dry conditions and low humidity.
Avoid overly humid environments, which can promote rot or fungal issues.
Temperature
Thrives in warm temperatures, ideally 21-35°C.
Can tolerate brief exposure to cooler temperatures down to -4°C but should be protected from prolonged frost.
Soil
Requires well-draining, gritty soil, such as a cactus or succulent mix.
Incorporate sand, pumice, or perlite to improve aeration.
Ensure the pot has adequate drainage holes.
Fertilisation
Feed with a diluted cactus fertiliser every 4-6 weeks during the growing season.
Do not fertilise during dormancy in fall and winter.
Repotting
Repot every 2-3 years or when the cactus outgrows its pot.
Use a pot slightly larger than the root ball with excellent drainage.
Handle carefully using gloves or tongs to avoid injury from the spines.
Pruning
Minimal pruning is required. Remove dead or damaged spines or offsets using sterilized tools.
Pests
Generally pest-resistant but can occasionally attract scale, mealybugs, or spider mites.
Treat infestations promptly with neem oil or insecticidal soap.
Propagation
Propagation is typically done via seeds, as offsets are rare.
Sow seeds in a well-draining mix and keep them warm (75-85°F or 24-29°C) and lightly moist until germination.
