Hylocereus undatus, commonly known as the Dragon Fruit or Pitaya, is a vining cactus native to Central and South America. This plant is renowned for its large, night-blooming white flowers and its vibrant, exotic fruit with a sweet, mildly tangy taste. The fruit typically has a bright pink or red skin and white or red flesh speckled with tiny black seeds. Hylocereus undatus is often grown for its ornamental value as well as its edible fruit.
Light
Prefers full sun to partial shade. Requires at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight daily for optimal growth and fruit production. Can tolerate some shade, especially in very hot climates.
Water
Water thoroughly when the top 2-3 inches of soil are dry. Reduce watering in the winter when the plant is not actively growing. Avoid overwatering, as it can lead to root rot.
Humidity
Thrives in low to moderate humidity levels. Can tolerate higher humidity as long as the soil drains well and doesn't stay soggy.
Temperature
Ideal temperature range: 18-27°C. Protect from frost and temperatures below 50°F 10°C.
Fertilisation
Feed with a balanced, water-soluble fertiliser every 4-6 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer). Reduce feeding in fall and winter.
Repotting
Repot every 2-3 years or when the plant becomes root-bound. Choose a pot that is one size larger and has drainage holes.
Support
Provide a trellis or other support for the vining stems. Train the vines to climb for better growth and fruit production.
Pests
Watch for common pests like aphids, mealybugs, and spider mites. Treat with insecticidal soap or neem oil if needed.
Propagation
Easily propagated through stem cuttings. Take a cutting and let it dry for a few days to callous before planting in well-draining soil. Ensure good light and temperature conditions for successful rooting.
