Monsteras are nicknamed the Swiss cheese plant due to the holes in its leaves. Monsteras leaves have holes as they are used to growing in jungle shade. The gaps in its leaves allow light to reach down to the foliage on the flower. As the plant gets larger, that's when the holes start to appear. They really make a statement in any home/office and are always quite easy to take care of, despite their size!

Where do I come from?

Monsteras are native to Central and South America.

Light

Monstera Deliciosa plants prefer bright, indirect light. They can tolerate some direct sunlight, but too much can burn the leaves. If the plant is getting too much direct sunlight, you may notice brown patches on the leaves or leaves that are yellowing or curling.

On the other hand, if the plant is not getting enough light, you may notice that it's growing more slowly than usual or that the leaves are smaller than normal. In low light conditions, the plant may also develop long, spindly stems with widely spaced leaves.

Ideally, place your Monstera Deliciosa in a bright, indirect light location, such as near a north or east-facing window. If you notice the plant getting too much direct sunlight, you can move it farther away from the window or use a sheer curtain to filter the light. If the plant is not getting enough light, you can move it closer to the window or provide supplemental artificial lighting, such as a grow light.

Water

Water when the top inch of soil is dry: Monstera Deliciosa plants prefer moist soil but do not like to sit in standing water. To check if it's time to water, stick your finger about an inch into the soil. If it feels dry, it's time to water.

Water thoroughly: When you water, make sure to water thoroughly so that the water reaches the bottom of the pot and runs out of the drainage holes. This ensures that all of the roots get enough water.

Don't overwater: Overwatering can lead to root rot and other problems. Make sure the pot has good drainage to prevent water from pooling at the bottom.

Adjust watering based on the environment: During the growing season (spring and summer), Monstera Deliciosa plants will need more frequent watering than during the dormant season (fall and winter). Additionally, if the plant is in a bright, sunny spot, it may need more water than if it's in a lower light area.

Humidity

Monstera Deliciosa plants prefer high humidity levels, but they can tolerate lower humidity levels as well. In its native environment, the plant grows in tropical regions with high humidity levels. Therefore, replicating these conditions as much as possible will help the plant thrive.

It's important to note that excessive humidity can also lead to problems like fungal growth or pests. So it's important to monitor the humidity level around your Monstera Deliciosa and adjust your care routine as needed.

Am I Pet Friendly?

Monstera Deliciosa plants are toxic to pets, including dogs and cats. The plant contains calcium oxalate crystals, which can cause irritation and swelling of the mouth, throat, and digestive system if ingested. Therefore, it's important to keep your pets away from Monstera Deliciosa plants and to seek veterinary care immediately if you suspect that your pet has ingested any part of the plant.

What size am I?
