Pachycereus pringlei, commonly known as the Mexican Giant Cardon or simply Cardon Cactus, is one of the largest cacti in the world, native to the deserts of northwestern Mexico. This impressive columnar cactus can grow up to 60 feet (18 meters) tall and live for several centuries. Its thick, ribbed stems are covered in clusters of spines and can produce creamy white, bell-shaped flowers that bloom at night. The flowers are followed by edible, fleshy fruits. Known for its striking size and resilience, the Cardon Cactus is a true icon of arid landscapes.
Pachycereus pringlei is an awe-inspiring cactus that adds grandeur to desert gardens and large outdoor spaces. Its massive size and iconic shape make it a symbol of arid beauty, while its low-maintenance care requirements make it a fantastic choice for enthusiasts of drought-tolerant plants.
Light
Requires full sun for optimal growth.
Place outdoors in a sunny spot or indoors near a south-facing window with plenty of direct light.
Gradually introduce to full sun to prevent sunburn if recently relocated.
Water
Water deeply but infrequently, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings.
During the growing season (spring and summer), water every 2-4 weeks.
In fall and winter, reduce watering significantly, as the cactus is dormant.
Humidity
Thrives in dry, low-humidity environments.
Avoid high humidity, as it can increase the risk of rot and fungal issues.
Temperature
Prefers warm temperatures, ideally between 21-38°C.
Can tolerate brief exposure to temperatures as low as -4°C but should be protected from prolonged frost.
Soil
Use a well-draining cactus or succulent potting mix.
Enhance drainage by adding sand, pumice, or perlite.
Avoid heavy, water-retentive soils.
Fertilisation
Feed with a diluted cactus fertiliser once a month during the growing season.
Do not fertilise during the dormant period in fall and winter.
Repotting
Repot every 3-5 years or when the cactus outgrows its container.
Use a pot with excellent drainage, slightly larger than the root ball.
Handle with care, as the spines are sharp and sturdy.
Pruning
Requires minimal pruning.
Remove dead or damaged stems using sterilized tools. Allow cuts to callus over before watering.
Propagation
Propagate via seeds or cuttings.
For cuttings, allow the cut end to callus for several days before planting in dry soil.
Seeds should be sown in a sandy, well-draining mix and kept warm and lightly moist until germination.
